Cologne as hand sanitiser in Turkey

Funnily enough, I've just read an article in the Belgian press about Turkish using Cologne for sanitising:

It refers to "eau de cologne", which has usually between 60 and 80-85% of alcohol (dilute ethanol I believe), the perfume or the blend extracts are much less concentrated (4-6%, which is below "eau de toilette"); the closest thing available in the UK I can think of is the aftershave lotions by Boots and Superdrug (those that cost about £2, "freshwood", "forest fresh"). To sanitise effectively, the alcohol percentage must be between 70 and 85% though.

For instance, the most common eaux de cologne, available in French supermarkets are usually 70%.

I have some of the Osmanli lemon aftershave saved on my ebay wishlist. I made a note, that on 3rd of March, the price for a 400ml bottle was £6.25. The price for a 200ml bottle is now £10.75.

Dont think I will be buying any for now due to profiteering

Not good and clear profiteering, you may want to report that to eBay as they and Amazon have said they are watching for it and removing listings.

`ok, sorted. I pout an order in then cancelled it and asked the question to La Barbiere. They were very good and honest as usual. Here is their reply.

Hi Simon,

I've cancelled for you. It's 80 proof, not 80% ABV. Whoever (another company) wrote the description on Amazon has got it muddled up and once it's there, it's hard to change.

It's great as a cologne/refreshener, if you are wanting it for hand sanitiser I would stick with proper hand gel or soap and water.

In the original BBC article I wonder if the Doctor providing the information is confusing proof with ABV? I'm sticking with the bleach.

After the hand sanitiser shortage, chemists and pharmacies* were allowed (and encouraged) to produce their own; prices have been defined by law (<300ml €14.68/L, >300ml €13.19/L).

*they are independent in France (no big chains like Boots or supermarkets like Sainsburry's selling medications), so they have their own shop and still do prepare (rarely these days) different drugs, ointments, etc.

Got this from my local chemist, it's rather liquid than viscous; ethanol+hydrogen peroxide+glycerol.

That should do the trick. Be ok with a flavoured tonic mixer as well. Lavender maybe?

I am partial to lavender as a flavouring. Great in shortbread, cake, crème brûlée, undies drawer ... a very useful plant.

This one is Lavanda (lavender) scented with some lemon. Quite nice, lasts a while on the hands.

I was only half joking. Seems like the% alcohol is good to go as well. Well over what would do the trick on a nasty virus.

Lavender is a great scent though. Always reminds me of as a lad visiting my grandparent. My grandad was a very keen gardener and they had a long border full of lavender plants. That and sweet peas, not that I’d feel anything sweet pea based would be masculine enough.

Just had another of these delivered. I got the last one in May so it has not done bad.. Still got 10% left of the old one too. Price still good as well. Recommended .
