Classical music fans

If I listen to any music while shaving or while driving, it is classical. I played oboe for many years, through Stanford U orchestras and Seattle community orchestras, until my mouth muscles got too old to maintain a good embouchure.

From the same group of concerts when I was 15 and I went up to London to hear all the concerts by Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovich and Rozhdestvensky. Here's the Shostakovich Cello Concerto 1 which was played. In the guest box were Britten, Shostakovich, Hindemith and probably other giants of modern music I didn't even recognise.

I did 3 years at the Royal Academy of Music on bass and composition and I always enjoyed playing in orchestras, but my reading wasn't ever great and I was much better at jazz, plus it was a lot more fun. I also think the double bass is a fine solo instrument for jazz but a lousy one for classical music, and I wanted to improvise and play solos. I enjoy songwriting these days - jazz rhythms with string arrangements. I don't have a band now, though. Used to when I was 6 years in Norway. Loved that period.

I come from Bridgend in South Wales. One day there I was browsing through the paper and saw an ad for "Classic CDs for sale". I phoned the guy, who had a thick Welsh accent which I can't reproduce here, and asked him what classics he had, like Bach, Mozart and the like. He replied...
"No, no.... the Classics, see? Tom Jones, Treorchy Male Voice Choir, Shirley Bassey, Charlotte Church....."

They don't mess about down the valleys.

I have never worked out what I like.
Should put some effort into it.
I sometimes hear stuff that I really like.
