it's probably your first that meets the legal emissions - hence why it feels underwhelming / faulty.

Hmmn, I think the engine model I got 1 ltr Evo just isn't powerful enough, I don't do a lot of motorway miles, it's mainly town driving. I drive a works van through the day. When it has gone on the motorway it's just really unexciting and plodding with zero power, I have to drop down at every incline and I have to keep the revs high to get anything out of it. It's actually fatiguing to drive.

Yeah - my comment was just a cheap dig at VW.
If you're used to a decent sized diesel with loads of torque and small capacity petrol is hard work. Despite diesel being the actual spawn of the devil it does make motorway munching easy.

So, I had a phone call today, surprise, surprise no fault found though they did the software update. They are keeping it all day tomorrow to give a machanic time for a real test drive. Hmmnn, cars do not display the Engine Management and EPC (throttle control) lights and have the car Kangerooing around the road for no good reason. Anyway, I have to trust the fault is now fixed. They wouldn't admit a fault on a cr with 1000 miles on the clock anyway...Not exactly trust inspiring when people tell others what happened is it?

Why do you say this? Just curious... I have driven a variety of modern, efficient, small petrol engines recently, vauxhall and mitsubishi and the fuel economy is simply dreadful. I'm talking 27mpg on a motorway. Power for overtaking is non existent. Give me my 140bhp VW diesel any day of week. Power, torque and 55mpg...

My daily runner is the Peugeot 308cc 2 litre turbo diesel, great engine, 140 bhp, loads of torque and the 18” tyres make it stick to the road like brown stuff on a blanket. Haven’t driven the new Octavia 1 litre much, whilst it’s a capable enough family cruiser, I’ve not much of an idea what it will do on the motorway, but I recon my Pug will do better.

Because Dieselgate highlighted that whilst Diesel is good for not emitting greenhouse gases it does emit [even with Diesel particulate filters (DPF) and lean NOx traps (LNT) and Urea (AdBlue)] particulates which cause / aggravate breathing problems. In cities these particulate just hang around whereas in the country they do at least get blown away. After Dieselgate (where VW were found to emit up to 50x the legal limit of particulates) all Diesels where vilified despite Diesel having far higher specific energy density (and therefore more efficient) than petrol/gasoline, CNG, LPG, etc. There are lots of very good engineering reasons to have a Diesel car, but Diesels are generally as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool and trying to get them as clean as a petrol is becoming impossible.

Small to medium passenger car Diesels will be gone by 2021-2 (EU stage 7) replaced with petrol with electric assistance (mHEV / FHEV / PHEV)

Wayne your not alone. I won't go into the whole story as I'll probably develop arthritis. However after 4 visits to BMW following the engine management light coming on and my car halting to a stop on a very busy roundabout. I am now approx 4k lighter in the wallet and have driven 2 courtesy cars (which I'm told I was lucky to get) waited 4 weeks and spoken to BMW customer services 8 times my car is finally working as it should. Or at least that's what I think. I needed new injectors amongst other things. Apparently it is leaking oil around the gearbox? Apparently not a major fault.

Keeping your cool with the frenemy is always a good shout. Managed to get a kings suite at Hilton in Iceland, upgraded from a standard. Great timing as I was proposing to the Mrs :)

So the use of Adblue actually contributes to the problem? No irony there, didn't know that. Luv my oil burner.

My mate and I were talking about spotless MOT’s the other day. He’s a car dealer for MG and use to be for Ford. He was saying a totally spotless MOT with not even an advisory could raise a suspicion. Bearing in mind my Pug he sold me has never failed and never had one advisory in its ten years. Personally I’m not sure I share his view, surely a clean and spotless record is a sign the car has been cared for ?

No, despite the AdBlue, particulates are emitted. Basically engineers have run out of ideas to make Diesel any cleaner.
