Burbot

I never heard of a Burbot until this morning when I read in the local paper that a 14 year old boy caught one ice fishing. Turns out it is a new Ontario provincial record at 43 inches in length and weighing 23 pounds.

I had to look it up and turns out I had heard of it but by the name of Ling. Not a pretty fish by any stretch of the imagination.

When I used to fish, in 1960s, I knew of these from books but never saw or caught one. However, they became extinct here in the early 1970s.

It seems though, that there are attempts being made to reintroduce it to some rivers here.

Never heard of burbot but ling yes. Ling is maybe a different thing around the UK though. Interesting, I’ll go have a look.
