Bleeding without cutting myself - can you help?

@fabfu What did you shave with before you got your DE? Did you shave against the grain then, and did you have the same problem?

Some people just can’t shave against the grain, I’m one of them, and have accepted that a less-close shave is worth it if it means avoiding the pain and irritation. By sticking to with and across the grain I can shave daily.

If you are bleeding, it means you cut yourself. I realize you don’t consider these small bleeds to be cuts, but that is exactly what they are. But what is the cause? One reason could be your technique. You could be pressing too hard instead of allowing the weight of the razor to do its thing. Also, it could be the blades you are using. If they aren’t sharp enough you can tend to get these micro nicks. Or if they are too sharp combined with poor technique, voila! Blood. Also, it could be your razor. If your razor has issues or it is a low quality brand, you’ll see blood. Also, if your lather isn’t slick enough to provide satisfactory lubrication, blood. Bottom line, stopping the bleeding is within your control. You need to experiment by trial and error until you eliminate the bloodletting.

I shaved with a Gillete Fusion 5, bit never ATG or XTG the grain, only with the grain. At that time i didn‘t have a lot of beard growth so it was not necessairy. Bit it is nice to hear that it works for you this way! I will try and learn :)

Shaving against the grain isn't necessary no matter what your beard growth, no-one other than you is going to know if you didn't do it.

My skin doesn't like shaving against the grain either, though i don’t get bleeding spots. I have a different problem. If i shave WTG only, i need to do it in the morning to look freshly shaved. If i do XTG or ATG pass(es) in the evening, i look good in the morning, but my neck area becomes too sensitive to shave daily, and it needs at least two days of "rest" before the next shave. After ATG it also tends to be a bit touch-sensitive, so i do that in special occasions or when i feel like it. It's mostly 1xWTG+1.5XTG passes for me and i'm fine for the next 3 days. Luckily my work doesn't demand being freshly shaved, or i'd need a change od routine.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give an update about my shaving jurney. I took your tips as a guideline for my about 8 shaves I had since I asked this question. Here are the things I changed:

1. I tried to hold the razor more towards the head to minimize the pressure on my skin
2. I did one pass WTG and then one pass XTG. I avoided shaving ATG.
3. I experimented with the angle of the razor and adjusted it to a flatter angle

The result is pretty nice, I did bleed very rarely and after the shave, my skin did not feel as itchy and uncomfortable as when I did a pass ATG.

I can also shave more often, as my skin is not too strained from the past shave. However, in only doing a pass XTG, the shave is not nearly as close as ATG. This is the sacrifice I must make to protect my skin. But I think this will improve as I get a better technique.

Thanks for all your kind tips, they really helped!

Yes, the situation will improve as your technique does. Once your technique really improves you may eventually even be able to shave ATG without problems.
