Bay rum choices

Ah, the old Bay rum conundrum, what is the best one out there?
The answer is pretty much all of them!
The big problem with the bay rum scent is that, it is a colossal "Well hello there" that dissolves into a gentle waft of nothingness.

I have a few of bay rums, which include Pinaud's mythical beast "virgin Isle" but I also have Extro Cosmesi bay rum edt/as.
The Extro isn't an explosion of fragrance like virgin Isle but it is the only bay rum that I have tried that lasts hours!

Well, I didn’t see this coming, but it seems I’m a bay rum guy. It started with a sample of Barrister and Mann’s bay rum soap. Then I bought a tub. And then the aftershave splash. And then two bottles of DRH‘s bay rum splash (on sale @ $25 ea. which puts it in the same category as B&M and Captain’s Choice). The Harris splash is outstanding, btw. I’m guessing it gets less love than other brands because of the price. I can’t get enough of the stuff. A number of years ago I’d tried VIBR and was unimpressed, but may have to give it another go. A bottle of the Captain’s Choice is on my eventual buy list. Then there are the lesser known and talked about brands. I’m running out of shelf space :unsure:

American-style bay rum has a scent relying on other spices, such as clove, cinnamon, citrus, vanilla, eucalyptus, musk. Clove tends to dominate the scent whilst the bay rum is a fleeting top note scent.

I detect lemon (and perhaps something else, too?) in the Harris splash. Conversely, I only get one note from the B&M splash. It seems to my uneducated nose that B&M is perhaps a truer representation of bay. Am I going in the right direction here?

I believe that American-style bay rums (eg St Johns Bay Rum and DR Harris Bay Rum) are made from (authentic) bay rum leaf, pimenta racemosa, whereas others (eg RazoRock Black Bay) are made from bay laurel leaf, laurus nobilis. Unfortunately, product descriptions often don’t specify which.
