When I started playing when I was a teenager I learnt A the 'old' way. Justin's method does make sense but when I restarted playing a couple of years ago I stuck with the one I knew. He really knows his stuff though and can explain very clearly. Wish the site existed when I first started!
There isn’t a right way to play any chord. It all depends on where you’re coming from and where you’re headed. Keeping the index anchored helps going from A to D and back. But A to Em might be easier to do the last three fingers because then you just anchor with your middle and plop the index down or your Em (though I don’t play it this way).
Well done on E, A, and D. Those are honestly really hard and it’s especially tough to get the string muting down so you’re not hitting E and A on your D chord. The rest of the cowboy chords are easier so I expect you’ll move quickly.

Well said. The right hand is often ignored in the beginning.
The first three chords I learnt were G, C and D.
Perhaps tutors start with A and E because when you move onto bar chords they are the main two shapes required.

Update with question. I am progressing well and can confidently hit A,D,E and almost without looking. I haven’t practiced anything else. My fingers are forming callouses now. Quick question. How long will it take for my fingers (approx) to stop this happening? And is it worth buying a capo so I can put over the first fret so I don’t have to press as hard on the 2nd as on the 1st fret? I find my index finger forms a rut and then I can’t hold the 4th string down to get a clear tone unless I press a lot harder.

As to your finger callous question, not sure, I can't remember. Keep at it and it will get better. I know it sounds a bit corny but the fingers do get better with use, what gauge strings do you use? 9s are really easy to press down, although 10s aren't particularly heavy strings, might be worth a look though.
You might be better without the capo for a while, unless you are deliberately using one to change the key/ chords you're playing.

That's what its all about, bit of fun.
I think it took two or three months for the callouses to form, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't bother with a capo for helping your fingers. You're on an electric so the strings are already fairly easy to press down. If you were getting frustrated (or if you were on an acoustic) then I would say get a capo as a crutch to keep yourself motivated. But you seem like a dedicated person so I would avoid the capo in order to speed up your callous development. The more you can tough it out now the sooner your fingers will be able to handle the abuse.
