I almost always use an alcohol based splash first then a balm afterwards. As I age, I’m finding I need balm less often although it’s use is still in the majority. Perhaps it’s my skin, perhaps it’s technique or settling on suitable products or perhaps it’s a combination of these features.
The more healing aftershaves such as Proraso Red and Quorum with its witch hazel content and small menthol input are likely the positive elements in not requiring balm. As a cheap yet very effective option, Boot’s Freshwood AS & balm make an excellent pair and sometimes the balm isn’t needed at all. Both offer great bang for the buck and smell nicely traditional to my old fashioned beak.
I’ve yet to try Bart’s Balms but I haven’t read a negative review. I’ve too much stuff to use up first. Another good and low cost balm that I’d use after the aforementioned alcohol splash, is the Real Shaving Co or RSC variants. Healing, comforting, moisturising for those with dry skin and not greasy either.
I try to avoid balm whenever I can these days but if it’s required, on it goes - I’ve no qualms in employing balms. What suits one face won’t necessarily suit another so use what works for you and in what order you prefer. As I’ve said, I go splash then balm but if the reverse works better for you then do it. It’s your shave ultimately.
Great information already posted so thank you from one who is always learning despite hacking at my old physog with a DE for ten years and various ‘systems’ for ten to fifteen years prior to that. Keep noting your experiences and adding to the wealth of information and knowledge here.
