Definitely following in this household.

Mrs P and Daughter rooting for Scotland, I’m England and Germany. Consequently, very pleased with yesterday’s result! 😉

I've enjoyed learning about the sport through my grandchildren's participation. Did you play? If so, what position?

Good to see another convert. 😊

Back in the last century, I played a few games as part of an office side, usually in midfield. Harry Kane I was not!

My grandson played as a child, but was all over the field. He just couldn't stay where he was supposed to be. His coach said she was going to nail his feet to the ground. After three years playing baseball and being bored, he played soccer last Fall for a AYSO league. He had grown, matured, and was suddenly a factor on the field.

As an 8th graders he played for the highschool team and this Spring another AYSO team. Later they chose players from several teams to compete in a tournament this coming weekend.

Besides league play, the local professional team has skill camps. He went to one over Spring break and another one is this week for 14-17 year olds. He will most likely play AYSO this Fall and have Winter workouts with the high school team later. His HS coach told him he plays like Messi.

They have put him at various positions because of his speed and stamina.

Oh, BTW, I read about Harry Kane's early years. Apparently, he was a late bloomer.

Looking good. Always nice to use the WC as a springboard to encourage younger players to get involved and develop.

I hope he enjoys it and finds it useful 👍
He does. $150 for 3x1.5 hour sessons. Just 20 players for the skills camp. Goal keeper camp was afterwards. Professional coaches and players are the instructors

Sounds great especially when you've got decent coaches doing the teaching. Are the remaining sessions today and tomorrow then or is it a weekly thing?

First off, Messi's "hat trick" as a 39 year old is something to talk about, right?

I want to let the grandson drive whatever comes next. As he matures, he will decide how far he goes. I just want to provide whatever wisdom and resources I can to make his intension come to fruition. I once read that Messi looks toward heaven in appreciation for his grandmother's support after a goal.

Messi is a talent no doubt about that! He's been fortunate to have such a lengthy career too. He's looked after himself well.

I'm sure your grandson will find his own way. I think one of the worse things that can happen to a sportsman or sportswoman is that they lose the love for their chosen discipline. If he loves what he's doing, he won't need any guidance. He'll just need a taxi 🚕 to get him to practise and matches. We know a young lad whose parents take him an hour down the road and back throughout the week to play for Crewe youth setup - one of the better known youth academies over here. Half of these kids wouldn't get anywhere without the simple stuff like driving them around and washing their kit.

You sound like his go to chauffeur and cheerleader 😜

I agree. I did this process with my son and baseball, getting him around good instructors until the maturity kicks in. When he walked off the field his senior year, 18 years of a wonderful processes came to a close, but his comment was, "it's been a good ride".
