Getting bored of this shaving lark

I am the same, shaving not enough to excite anymore got into making gear and still like that but the parade of shaving brushes with new handles is starting to get long, currently stropping on at least half a dozen strops, a bunch of straight razors got new scales, made matching rings for every finger, new handle for kitchen knife, with DIY overdoing it just like when I had RAD :)

edit: and if it wasn't for the lye, I would certainly have started making DIY soap
Why because of the lye if I may ask?

- Building tube amplifiers and preamps. Very active, and has been for 20 years. I've built mountains of stuff and have lots of parts.
- Building tube microphones. New hobby. finished one which sounds nice. Have parts to build 5 more. Use mics for songwriting.
- Bass guitars. I'm an ex-pro bass player so this never fades. Enjoy practising and may build myself a new short scale bass.
What kind of mics have you built? LDC's? Do you have anywhere online with pictures of your preamps/mics and so on? I'm hopeless with a soldering iron but if I wasn't I'd make myself guitar pedals by the masses, the masses I tell you (insert evil laugh).

Are you going to build a bass from kit or from scratch? Have you built one before? Do you have the tools already?

Yes - LDC only, and just tube mics. No pics online.

Good question - how to build a bass. I can do woodwork but my small workshop is only set up for electronics and metalwork. Sawdust would be an issue, it's hard enough to clean up the metal filings. So I think it would be putting necks on bodies and sorting out new pickups, bridges and electronics. I've been looking at parts suppliers for guitars and basses in the last few weeks and ...
a) all the good deals are in the USA with Warmoth etc.
b) imported US parts are silly money here
c) its extremely hard to get hold of bass parts that aren't Fender P or J bass. Building a short scale 30" is arcane stuff for suppliers.
d) when you add up all the parts it's usually cheaper to buy an unwanted bass on eBay. There you can get short scale deals.

I drool over the boutique short scale basses from Mensinger and Maruszczyk. Now that's how to build a bass. Plus the pickups from Bassculture in Germany and Domanski are truly beautiful.

I go through cycles when it comes to my 'excitement' a.k.a. AD.

I've been into this hobby for 8 years now, and didn't first register for shave fora until ~2 years ago ( though I did lurk for years), when I was going through a brief period of "NEED TO ACQUIRE. NEED TO ACQUIRE." Then, poof! I was gone.

Until the recent holiday season, after I had completed a den sell-off, downsizing to bare minimums, when I grew curious again about what was out there. I have since been on a relatively controlled buying/trying spree. Based on my recent history when it comes ot my hobbies, wouldn't surprise me if I once again recede to enjoying the spoils of my AD. Or, I'll remain 'into the hobby' at least until my name comes up on the Wolfman list (probably 10+ months away from that).

Honestly, if you mix it as per all the safety instructions eg gloves, safety goggles, long sleeves and in a well ventilated area (I mix mine outside) you will have no problem at all. Leave it to cool outside then don the safety gear when mixing you will have no trouble believe me. Always lye to water, never the other way. Give it a go, it’s very rewarding and really easy.

I go though spells. Sell or bin loads then nothing for a while then slowly start accumulating again. That said I don’t do rotation well so never intend to have more than 2/3 razors ever again. Currently at 4 but just haven’t got round to listing the unwanted one.
The G/F thinks I’m mad spending what I do but admits it’s better than drinking/smoking etc.

If it wasn't this forum, I could definitely lose my interest in shaving stuff, etc.

But it's always good for me to write a review here, that even though no one would read it with interest, I am happy to share it.

Or even using a different combo and tell my opinion about it. Or answer someone's question, I never get bored.

But.. It is a fact, that I haven't bought anything the last 2 months shaving related, not even a cheap one, because I know that it would be difficult to use it often. I feel I end up being some kind of collector.

I know what I like and what I don't like, so even Milksteak is out there , for a strange reason, I don't want to chase it because I already have some fantastic soaps that I must use more often.

The interest Wayne maybe not come back, but again if you change some variables you could make a shave unpredictable and even then, even if you didn't like a blade you have never used before, the fun is still there, if you know what I mean.

I could use something safe for me every day but then again it would be boring, so I keep doing different things during a shave, and believe me, not a single shave is the same with the other..

There is no need to buy anything more, just make a wish list, update it often like me, don't get anything from there if you are not 100% that you will use it. I have a list with 15-20 products for over a year and I haven't bought anything from them! Lunatic Randy as always, a weirdo.

Up to 5 razors is fantastic. I have 11. I use 5-6 of them. I am almost sure I won't buy any other razor because the Blackland Dart I want is expensive for my wallet.

Soap & creams no more than 10-15, but unfortunately I have 80+ of them.

5 aftershaves is also a good number for balms and 10 for lotions. I have 50, I use 10 of them.

With brushes I hit finally the sweet spot, with 12 of them, but I still have some cheap Omega boars and a Semogue 620 that I don't really use.

I tend to go through periods of intense interest followed by a period of less interest in all of my hobbies and have done so with shaving over the past few years.

Strangely enough, it’s precisely this cycle that has enabled me to keep 4 to 5 main hobbies going over the past few years without losing too much interest in any one of them.

I enjoy the path of rediscovery and, over time, it has helped keep my interest levels in shaving up. Whilst it means that I miss out on the start of some new trends or release products from time to time, I’m cool with that as I invariably catch up in the end.

Heh, this is totally me. I was away from the scene for almost two years, "coming back" only a couple months ago to learn about, as one glaring example, the Raw Shaving RS-10 of which I knew nothing. A shame, as the way it is universally described, it sounds perfect for me, and I would've been a buyer at the original price.

I'd love to see some pictures of the LDC's at some point if you ever have the time to do so.

There are a few UK based companies that make bodies/necks like Warmoth, Guitar Build is the most well known one and their quality is supposed to be excellent but they don't really do much for short scale instruments at this moment in time. Could be worth sending them a message though? All their bodies are P&J though.

I post on a guitar forum and there are a few guys who finish instruments, SC Relics is a guy who's work seems to be getting better by the day. There's another who makes bodies and necks who lives in North London I think who's work is very good as well, his prices I think are pretty good from what I remember.

As for pickups, as I'm a guitarist I really only know about guitar pickup makers, and one of the guys who I've bought from makes bass pickups as well but he's mainly known for his guitar pickups and has an excellent reputation. The downside is ordering from him isn't the easiest thing to do (Mojo Pickups) and they are a few vintage style passive pickups.

I had a look at the makers you mentioned and their basses look pretty out there! Great quality though. The guitar side of things is definitely more conversative, my nice instruments are for sure (pretty much based on designs from 1920's -1930's to the latest!)

Out of control
I'm a psychologist specialising in musicians and while that's very interesting and has been a great career, it's very "in the head".
I know you never really know until you experience it, but that sounds like a really interesting job. Turning a passion into a job is sometimes a way to kill that passion, but I imagine you can keep the love for music whilst still having an interesting, connected way of earning a living.

Yeah that's kinda my current standard but it's frustrating I'm not getting much better.
