Zinc is more reactive than iron or steel and thus will attract almost all local oxidation until it completely corrodes away.

The relative reactivity of zinc and its ability to attract oxidation to itself makes it an efficient sacrificial anode in cathodic protection.

Just this last week a frankenrazor (long Merkur handle attached to a Muhle head) I gave to a dear friend some ten years ago returned to my den. That long handle has now been reunited with the Merkur head it originally came with, and the Muhle head seems to work real well with a short, chrome plated Gillette-esque Merkur handle I had laying around. The plating on the Muhle head in the area of the post seems to have held up better than did the Merkur. Good shavers though, both of them
