Occam’s Razor SS DE version.....

Just got this in today. Very nice presentation and packaging as is with all of the razors I’ve purchased from Classic Shaving. I ordered the complete razor set which includes two (2) top caps & three (3) base plates. The two open comb base plates are quite unique and are like nothing I’ve seen before. Truthfully though, there is a bar on all base plates so I don’t know how one would classify it as a true open comb just on merely how it’s designed. Perhaps once one shaves with it it will give an open comb like shave feel? Don’t know but, I plan I finding out in a few as I get geared up for tonight’s shave. Quality looks very good and the handle is superb to hold with excellent knurling and feel in the hands. There are no gap sizes or base plate #’s to let one know which of the plates are mild or more efficient (aggressive) feeling. Just has the Occam’s Razor inscribed on all three base plates. Perhaps I’ll go with the widest designed “hybrid open comb” base plate and go from there.

Just a real quick first take on the Occam’s maiden shave. First thing though is I’m not sure which of the plates offers the more efficient/aggressive shave of the group. I went with the more radical looking plate with a fresh Gillette Platinum and just went through a little over a day and a half of growth. A very efficient yet quite smooth 3 pass shave. If you look at the photo below you will see that there isn’t a whole lot of blade reveal and the gap is actually quite low but, it gives a very nice blade feeling shave that is a bit more than the START with the .90 and just a tad under the Charcoal Goods L2 and is somewhere in the middle of both in smoothness. Or, think of the RR Gamechanger .84 and the Timeless .95 and it lands somewhere in between those two. Honestly, for it’s first outing it was a very pleasing and surprisingly good shave as the razor exhibits excellent feel and balance. Need to go through the other two plates with a few more shaves on each to get a better picture but, so far on it’s first go, it’s a very competent shaver and for the money an unbelievably good deal.

Excellent explanation of where this razor fits in the crowded modern DE market, Thank you! Look forward to your follow ups.

It's... alive!
I'd had my eyes on until I saw uncovered tabs. It's only an issue with some blades, but I'd rather have then covered these days.
Thanks for the writeup, though. :)

Yes, they are uncovered but, it's only a slight protrusion on both sides. Not as extreme say as the Karve or any of the Vintage Gillette's. Very minimal to be honest at about perhaps a 16th of an inch on each side.

Couldn’t get a shave in yesterday (double-shift at work) but, back on track today and wanted to try the other hybrid plate on the Occam’s DE. Used the same Gillette Platinum blade from the first shave and honestly it was a really good shave. A very comfortable, smooth and a nicely efficient feeling shave. A complete 3 pass affair without any issues in terms of irritation or nics. I did get a couple of small weepers on the chin from trying to buff a bit quicker than normal but, they were gone with a quick cold water rinse and my alum pass. This shave though was a bit smoother than the previous shave with the other hybrid OC plate. Still felt a bit of blade feel but, not as pronounced as the other. The face feel was sort of RR Gamechanger .68 like yet finish was more akin to the .84 sb variant. Not as smooth or mild as the GC .68 but, a nice trade-off with slightly more blade feel and about as smooth if not smoother than the GC .84 sb. Not bad to be honest and so far these two hybrid OC base plates have provided very good cutting performance with solid shave results to back them up. Next shave will be with the solid bar variant and I’ll post my thoughts on that plate soon....

I’ll make this as short and sweet as possible, Gents. As I stated a couple of days ago, I needed to try out the straight bar plate on the Occam’s SS DE. The first two were a nice surprise in terms of efficiency and relative smoothness to each particular plate. I performed my usual 3 pass shave with the sb plate plus a quick buff job on the chin and Sir Adam. Two tiny weepers on the chin and one at the Apple as I was pressed for time as the Misses and I are going out tonight for some some fine wine & dine. Anyways, the razor with this particular plate was very smooth and easy on the skin. If you want to say mild, ok I won’t argue with you on it but, it did exhibit a deceptively efficient cutting action that reminded me somewhat of a Karve with a C sb plate. Yes, I know. Many consider that plate to be on the milder side but, as a daily it’s a real good and comfortable combo. I think I’d say the same thing with the Occam’s DE and it’s sb plate. This combo would be a very nice daily for those that just want a quick morning shave with no fuss or muss. It delivered a damn good DFS and only left a couple of stragglers around the Apple (most of my razors have a tough time there) and a straggler or two at the jawline right under both sides of my ears. Still was a really good and comfy shave. I need to put some more time in with the plates and just fiddle a bit more with it but, I’m very impressed with it’s make, design and quality of finish. It gives a little bit of everything with all the base plates from nicely mild to quite efficient. And for the $$$ it’s a really good deal. Fitment is precise with a handle that is second to none in terms of the grip that it offers with knurling that’s just about perfect. I haven’t tried the top cap with the ridge down the middle as of yet and I’ll probably get a shave or two in with it just to see if it does aide with ones angle and technique. I like it and is a real alternative for those looking for a quality made safety razor set for well under $100. Mr. Webster & Classic Shaving promised a solid and affordable razor. They certainly delivered it here...

*On a side note. For the fragrance connoisseur (s) out there, the Guerlain L’Homme Ideal L’Intense Eau de Parfum is a fantastic fragrance. Dark, masculine, with a semi-sweet almond & smoke vibe oriental/spiceness that is pure heaven. A pure throwback with a pinch of modern perfumery thrown in. The best in the Ideal line up. Perfect for the colder climate and a night out. Highly recommend it........

A comprehensive review from you as always, if I were in the market for another DE razor this would seem to fit the bill nicely.
Great sounding frag as well, I may well treat myself to a bottle. :) P.

I’m really enjoying using this razor. 3 passes and it just gets better with every use. Probably about my 3rd shave with the Occam’s more aggressive plate (biggest holes) and it delivers consistently good results. I get 10+ hours of duration before any semblance of stubble appears which is fine on my end for a full days work or activities. In terms of cost versus performance this one is a real winner across the board. This razor punches way above it’s weight. Great offering for the money by CS.....
