Need a razor professionally honed

If you think you want to make using a honed straight a habit, I recommend learning to hone your own razors. With a little mentoring you can easily acquire the materials and skills needed. If you want to use a straight, but find you do not want to hone, a nice Feather SS Shavette with guarded blades would be an option.
Agree. I remember when Charles Roberts said "DE shaving is about prep, straight shaving is about cutlery. You'll never be a great straight shaver until you learn to hone straight razors".

I doubt that a 3k stone is fine enough to shave off - and I’m not about to experiment. The thing about stones is that the price rises exponentially with increases in grit - I finish on a 20k stone that is probably in excess of £300 now. Even lower grit stones are approaching that price and once you get into natural Japanese, well its a deep hole to drop into.

Almost the entire time I have been shaving with a DE, it has been lather up and shave with no prep other than lathering up. You can become a very proficient straight razor shaver if you have someone that knows how to hone keep your razor's edge up to snuff. In both types of shaving, it boils down to having both your shaving and lathering techniques up to par. Using a straight razor will take that requirement to a new level of importance as it is an unforgiving teacher.

He meant "lather" as part of "prep", I'm sure. He was the method shaving guy after all. (I'm talking about you Charles, RIP)

I suppose it depends what you mean by "very proficient". I've been straight shaving and honing since 2016, and I'm still learning ("re-remembering" might be better). It's hard to know what kind of edges you're really in sync with if someone else is doing the edges. You've got an ultra thin and flexy edge that chips, you can take it back to the stones, but if you've got to clean it, package it up, send it off, wait for someone else's idea of what a good edge is, I dunno, it adds extra layers of difficulty and distance (in several senses).

Wade and Butcher, for which I have one, made a SR with the engraving , “If your lather well, I’ll shave well”.

Learning to is good for keeping the knives in top shape. Thats what I use the Thuringian and Coticule for now.

I’ve never experienced the drama that SR shaving and honing can produce. Who can say what’s important except the person doing the cutting? Plus, some have facial hair. Using any straight around the bare chin and under the nose requires additional dexterity.

I would dare have a straight razor in the house, Mrs Vac can curdle milk with her bad moods.
In my youth they were a favourite of Scottish gangsters and thugs, usually called "a malky/malkie" ("malky" means "murder").

When you get your first straight razor it's like handling a nuclear detonator (which is silly).
After three months, you practically start juggling them (which is also silly).

You have to teach yourself not to try to catch one when you drop it.

Learning to hone your own straight razors is not necessary, to become proficient. All you need to do is take your time and listen to others, who have years of experience with SR shaving. @Lord Fatboy , I wouldn't hesitate giving @Steve56 my address, and exchange products, or ask for his advise, and help with honing, as well as @gssixgun . Both are very knowledgeable(experts) with Straight Razors and Hones/Honing. Both have my address, and I have exchanged back and forth with both, for years. Unfortunately, for many here, they are both based in the USA.
