Mattress toppers

Gents,
Looking at buying a memory foam mattress topper as a couple of years ago I bought a very stiff mattress and that was a huge mistake as I very often wake up sore- like I’ve been laying on a floor! I can’t trust the product assessments so does anyone have experience of using memory foam toppers and would a memory foam topper soften the feels of the mattress? Cheers Paul

Yes it will, but only kind if sort of. Like many things.... it depends.
I am no expert, but was looking into this over the last year a bit.

If you look into DIY mattresses (which we can't really do here in the uk due to our fire regs) you will see that a mattress is made up of two or three layers. You have the main support layer underneath, then a kind of medium layer and a top comfort layer.
In an ideal world,

So, it is all about your body type, weight and how you sleep.
(this is my rough simplistic version of it)
Also, yo need time to adjust to the new mattress.

So, you need a firm support layer, then you need the top comfort section which supports the curves of the body.
Imagine how you sleep and where the 'hollows' of you are when laying on the floor, you want those filled up and supported.
So, if you are a non boney light male back sleeper, you don't need much soft layer at the top for that.
Now imagine you are a female boney heavy side sleeper, ones hips will protrude much further down and so needs a deeper 'comfort' layer.
Or, more probably, an intermediate layer followed by a comfort.

Oh, look at Natural Latex as a product as well. More natural and lasts longer and breathes better. (I also found that fumes from memory foam stuff affected me)
If I had the money, the closest I could find to DIY was this:
which gives you a chance to adjust things and replace and swap around with wear.

That is your starter for ten.
Does that make some sort of sense?

We had a memory foam topper and just didn't get on with it - found it too hot. We tried latex and it was better, but we ended up with a wool topper which we love. I guess what I'm saying is YMMV but there's lots of options.
