In the end I just fancied a change, and there aren't any compelling reasons not to try something different. I fancy learning something new.

My peripherals worked immediately so no problems there.

1) A desktop note taking system like OneNote (which doesn't do synch to the internet as that's not allowed).
2) Some sort of USB multi port docking station which expands the number of USB ports.

Thanks for all the advice, and if you've any tips on the two migration challenges I have let me know.

If you go into your iCloud settings there are toggles for what it will sync and notes is one of them. You could use the built-in notes application but tell it not to sync to the net.

As for a USB hub, have a look on Amazon. I have one made by Anker which was inexpensive but is nicely made and works well. Mine is a combined hub and ethernet adaptor which comes in handy when I want a cabled connection.
