On many mornings I have a bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and blueberries. When I was a kid my grandfather used to say that oatmeal was the perfect breakfast to "stick to your ribs," and while I laughed at him then, I've realized that he was right.

I always thought oatmeal was the American name for porridge.

Yeah I think it is isn't it?
I often have porridge, sometimes the "overnight" variety. Lovely!

Oatmeal, porridge or whatever you want to call it is simply one of the best things you can put in your body. Full of cholesterol wicking soluble fibre, zinc and B-vits as well as being a source of slow release, energy giving carbs. Damn fine stuff, what, what!

Yeah, grand with a scratching of salt on top. I don't mind porridge. I'm largely gluten-free (yeah, I got "the condition" but can tolerate some), other grains and so on do still give me grief, but porridge doesn't for some reason. Providence.

Mum used to soak the oats overnight in milk. That was the '70s.

I think that works, although probably doesn't today as the oats will be all the same and the milk is no longer that natural. I don't really do milk either, but I've access to proper milk ... like from a cow, not a factory, so when I do, I enjoy it with something like porridge. Otherwise, it's A2 type: goat or sheep milk.

I used to get raw milk from my father in law's farm, straight from the tank in the cooling house, it was lovely! Unfortunately supermarkets driving down milk prices meant it was no longer viable and they gave up the milk cows to concentrate on beef. :(

We have steel cut Irish oats for breakfast most days. I drizzle mine with some raw honey whilst SWMBO sprinkles hers with a little bit of raw sugar.

Porridge Mon-Fri for me, squirt of honey and a few sultanas.

I use steel cut and lately have been mixing in Quinoa ( Keen-wa) and a rotation of cinnamon, raw honey or blueberries.
