This is another recent acquisition that I got along with my Muhle R89 black handle. It shaves basically the same, with a black rubber-coated handle for better grip. What surprised me most was how it handled the blade that came with it: a Feather. Ordinarily my skin can't handle a Feather blade. Too aggressive for me, even in milder razors like the Merkur 34 and Weishi 9306. Then again, when I first used the brand I was still new to shaving with safeties and hadn't yet refined my technique.

While i still got some irritation applying the alum block and aftershave, I got virtually no nicks. The last time I used a Feather, my face was a bloody mess. Maybe the razor and blade combo combined with my improved technique helped. I don't know. Has anybody else used this?

I love all the variants of DE/R89 but I can’t say I’ve noticed the same as you. I find Feather blades extremely sharp but rough and very overpriced. A modern German Wilkinson Sword is outstanding in the ‘89s.

That's been my experience with Feather blades, Dorco Prime Platinum, and Parker. The Muhle blade that came with my R89 gave me two weeks of close, irritation-and-nick-free shaves. It reminded me of the Russian-made Astra Superior Platinum. Could be my technique has improved enough that I no longer get major nicks barring accidents such as slippage, but the after-feel when applying my alum is still intense.

I have found that the King C Gillette DE razor is a very good copy / adaption of the Muhle R89 / EJ DE89 design.

I actually prefer to use it over my DE89
