When I learned to drive the instructor had brake and clutch on their side.

IIRC, when I learned to drive there were no driving schools in the area. You past an exam, got a beginner's licence and learned to drive a standard car with a licenced driver in the passenger seat and no dual controls. Times have changed for the better.
