ATT GEM SE razor

Just by unscrewing the handle, and the top plate comes off. But the bottom plate stays attached to the handle itself. There's a pin on the center of the bottom plate with a hook closer that secures the GEM type blade and top cap. Pretty ingenious, but not so sure of a pin and hook fastener is the most reliable way to go.....
Ahhhh thanks! :)

I am afraid I have a Sabre on the way....and unless RazoRock works its magic.......I need no more GEM razors!

I understand that the ATT Gem Razor in its original form has been revamped ,as it was far too mild. Has anyone on ATG tried the latest version , if so what are their views. I do enjoy using Vintage razors that use the Gem blade and would be interested to see how the ATT compares.

Yes, I have the revised head and it is quite nice, as efficient as any of my GEMs or EverReadys and purtty too. The little extra part does mean I don't strip it down and flush everything between shaves but only when I take it out of rotation or change blades.

Here is a summary I posted in a different thread: New Gem SE v Vintage SE

The ATT SE G1 ver 2.
Having just bought one secondhand and now I find it on sale in UK !
I like the feel and look of it, it comes fully assembled in a box. A lot of folk worry about the locking device which is secured in the handle, and when aligned properly acts as a latch to secure the top cover.

To load a blade unscrew handle carefully, until enough slack to remove top cover. Blade is loaded ensuring blade side cut outs are aligned with the pins, and blade is centred over the correctly aligned locking device. Then just tighten handle ready to shave.

How Does it Shave? With my strong beard I am not the best person to give an unbiased report, as like other recent S/S offerings [ Sabre V1 & Supply SE ] I find the ATT SE GI too mild for me,and I struggle to get a really good Shave, and I do not get an easy Shave with the likes of the Gem G- Bar . There are many who like the V2 edition, and report BBS/DFS Shaves.

Because of my problems I have spoken to Stan at ATT, response time 1hr ! , who said their clientele were happy in the main with the revised Razor, but maybe that I with my heavy beard could increase it aggression by placing a shim under the blade.

I messed about with ideas based on use of 1/2 spine shim, used injector blade. Finally ,made a quick fix and used plastic cut from container for 100 Persona/Gem blades:).

With a shim fitted I had my 3rd Shave with the ATT. As before very smooth, but now more blade feel and obviously now efficient as it eradicated my growth with ease. I completed what was a very easy and comfortable Shave, with a very good close all round finish.

Cleaning and rinsing of the Razor is very easy , just slacken off the handle and rinse away.the locking screw/device does not need to be removed and is very secure in the handle.

My View of ATT SE G1 v2.
Despite initial reservations on the locking device, I do like the look and feel of the Razor/Atlas handle and the way that it Shaves [ with assistance for me ] and am sure it will go down well the majority of Shavers who have more normal growth than me. Believe, that a head only version is available in UK.

In terms of performance is it any better than Vintage SE Razors, IMHO it may be pretty and made of the in vogue S/S ,but I get equally good/perhaps better shaves from my Vintage Razors. But it is fun to try different things.

HAPPY XMAS AND BEST WISHES TO ALL FORUM MEMBERS- especially the Mods.

Thank you MPF9 for the review and merry Christmas to you too.
I also have strong stubble in my later years and strugle with the likes of the 6S@6. The SP on plate 3 does the trick for me, the Sabre with the V2 bottom plate I find a bit mild and smooth enough. You said the ATT is smooth even with a shim and this cought my attention as I love smooth, efficient razors. My smoothest most efficient SE right now is the El-Jefe aka MR-SE on a proline which I find hard to beat on smoothness. My question to you before I place my order with Paul, how smooth is the G1 V2 compared to other razors you have tried?
Thank you.

To be honest, If I knew that I had to resort to using a shim on such an expensive Razor I would not have bothered buying it in the first place. If you are keen to use Razors that use the Gem Blade, you should go Vintage. My favourite is the Streamline, but that is not really smooth, beats the modern ones for me The Oldies can be jazzed up with modern handles and the heads can be replated and will last you years. IMHO the modern Gem offerings may be made of in vogue S/S, but they d not shave any better than the oldies.

You obviously have experience of the Razors using the AC blades, but have you ever considered Injectors, which actually can use the Schick Proline Type B blade. They can be purchased cheaply and can provide excellent Shaves for the toughest of beards.

Below is ER Streamline, easier to load than the new boys.

Thank you for the answer,
I do have the SP injector which I use with the B-20's and with plate 3 is great and smooth.
I have a couple of ER 1912 which are very efficient especially with a shim, but I like the looks of the ATT and Ihavan't had any ATT products so far.

Had my first shave with the g1 today, absolutely superb. smooth and efficient but mild at the same time.

Dfs in two passes and still smooth ten hours later which is unusual for me.

Are you still happy about your razor? I am on the fence about buying one
