Are these boxes common for English razors?

Hi everyone. A few months ago I purchased a couple of lovely John Clarke straight razors, each of them in its original box.

Fast forward three or four months and I got a very nice C Myers & Son razor.... That came in exactly the same kind of box. It got me thinking, as far as I know these two makers are not related so I was wondering if makers in Sheffield from a certain era would purchase their boxes to one maker?

II took a pic this morning of the box, before taking the razor to the post office.

Yes, very common - but for all razor makers - not just English. More often than not, the maker would have their name and maybe model type printed on the box. Some even added details such as a serial number for the razor. I would guess that the box makers would have been located nearby the razor makers - it’s a typical cottage industry type item.

Thanks Rob, I didn't know they were common outside England. The three razors I came across were all Sheffield made.

Some of these razor storage boxes were coffin shaped and naturally called razor coffins. That style of box I have never seen from a non British razor maker. Some also were made to hold two razors.

The coffin shaped ones were used mainly by Wade & Butcher, as far as I know. I got one precisely today, sure enough in its original coffin shaped box.

Mastropiero, they are called coffins and are very common. I have a very unusual one from a custom straight I recently acquired.
