Alternatives to Shaving Creams

I make my own shaving soap using a small amount of aerosol shaving gel mixed with a grated Palmolive shaving stick, plus around 25 ml of water and walmed in the oven, the mixture foams up and then settles into a 500ml hardish shaving puck that works extremely well.

I wanted to see if there was any wisdom out there to do with alternatives to shaving creams, the Google results were:
  • 1) Baby Oil.
  • 2) Body Lotion.
  • 3) Soap.
  • 4) Hair Conditioner.
  • 5) Shampoo.
  • 6) Coconut Oil.
  • 7) Almond Paste.
  • 8) Shea Butter.
The most obvious question is why would you bother, its not as if there is a cost benefit, and are there any downsides.

During this week I have tried 6 of the 8. #1,2,6, gave an okay shave but blocked the razor, I have had to remove the blade to clean it. #3 didnt lubricate enough, #4 and 5 were ok and if I was away from home and had to shave with something then hair conditioner would be a reluctant choice.
I havent used #7 or 8, I dont even know what almond paste looks like but it sounds like it would block the razor.

All in all, I wouldnt use any of the suggested alternatives but would nip out to a supermarket and buy the right stuff.

Ok gents, try some of this stuff. It is some really slick stuff that will go two passes and a cleanup. They also make a great post shave product called Tend Skin that really helps alleviate ingrown hairs. I started DE shaving to reduce the ingrown hairs that i was getting with cartridge razors. the DE shaving and the Tend Skin products have almost eliminated my ingrown hairs on my neck and face.

First and foremost I prefer hard soaps I lather. That said I've had some great shaves from some of the modern brushless products and even canned foam. The one class of products that have never delivered for me are the shave oils. I've hated every shave with every oil I've tried. Most of them are super expensive per amount compared to any soap. This of course is a huge YMMV area

I'll list some I've liked
Canned stuff: Barbasol Purple can and Orange Can, La Toja Can, Nivea Gel
Brushless: Dr. Carvers Shave butter, Cremo, Molle, Billy Jealousy, VanderHagen and Jatai. Of these Dr. Carvers and Billy Jealousy are best.

Didn't like (the oils): Tico, Somersets, Shave secret. Of those Tico was the best. That said even the cheapest soap I've lathered, Arko is so far ahead of this class of products, it's not funny.
