Castle Forbes vs The Body Shop's Maca Root

I used CF this morning and had an evening shave with Maca Root cream which left me wondering why I would pay the extra for CF. I know it is sacrilegious and controversial to say so but there it is. To me both are excellent shave creams. Anyone else feel the same way?

I believe the price of CF is down to the quality of EO used. I agree performance wise they are similar. I find CF more dense from the container and slightly slicker when shaving. Not a lot in it. I may be wrong but I believe Macca Root is produced by Creightons, or at least was. Creightons are pretty good, especially for the price.

I can, in Canada, purchase a 200 ml tub of CF for the equivalent of GBP 36.59/CAD 60.00 and a 200 ml tub of Maca Root for the equivalent GBP 10.82/CAD 18.00. Mind you the Maca Root is currently on sale for 1/2 price. For me the price to performance ratio just dose not warrant buying anymore CF, EO quality be damned. I actually prefer the Maca Root scent to the Lavender CF scent but that is irrelevant to the performance of either one.

Yep that makes sense to me, however, in all honesty the variance (IMO) when considering quality, between creams is so little (except Xpec) that the cheapest is automatically the best. For example, Murdock including marshmallow oil provides little difference to the likes of TOBS Aloe Vera. Hence based on price alone, I would put Palmolive at around £1 above Macca Root and many others. However, if it's scent your after, then the likes of Murdock is quite good but more expensive than CF. I guess it's all realtive to your preferences, like anything shaving related. I once added a tablespoon of olive oil to E45 cream which worked well and works out to be a very cheap shave, also used Aveeno cream and aqueous cream together, which again was adequate.

I wish Palmolive shave cream was that cheap over here but it has not been imported for years by any chain stores so when you can buy it here it is from specialty shaving sights. I normally don't care for creams preferring pucks instead.

Another pairing that has me shaking my head is MdC vs Palmolive shave sticks grated and compacted into a bowl puck form. I can't say, for my own use, that MdC is miles ahead of the grated Palmolive shave sticks performance wise.

Another soap that impresses me every time I use it is Arko used as a stick or pressed into a bowl puck form. Just hard to beat the lather it makes for any price. I don't have sensitive skin and like the strong lemon smell which reminds me of Sunlight bar soap. I can see people having allergies to ingredients in soap/creams or being fussy on scent but performance is what counts the most for me. I won't torture myself with irritation or a scent I can't stand either.

Soaps/creams have to perform for me as I shave daily with a straight razor and do a 4 pass shave.

I like both CF and maca root. Castle Forbes lavender is one of my top shelf items.

I've only used Arko soap once and it burned my face. Evil stuff IMO

Yes, never said CF is not an excellent cream. All I said was that Maca Root was so close to being equally excellent, for me, that the price differential made no sense whatsoever to me. I could not really say there was an appreciable difference in the quality or outcome of the shave, for me, between these two products.

Yes, I did acknowledge that some people had sensitivities to ingredients in certain soaps/creams. Unfortunately you did have a reaction to something in Arko. I do not have that happen and the lather is excellent for me.

This definitely demonstrates the fact that YMMV. I find Arko to load as a foam and requiring a heavy load to become more stable, similar to the Palmolive stick, however the latter produces a better post shave result. I find with MdC a 30 second load is incomparable to Arko, in that it provides enough thick and rich lather for 5 passes; not drying out my skin (probably coconut oil). I have very hard water so perhaps this plays a part. Also I have to admit I haven't lathered Arko for 3 years (burns my face obviously YMMV) and I'm now using high end brushes. Another cheap cream which I find is similar to the initial stage of lather production with Arko (but then becomes very creamy and richer than Arko IMO) is Vicco turmeric and this is marketed as a foam. Going back to price and on price alone Palmolive V MdC is pretty hard to pull apart unless you really know what your looking for. Again IMO it is the lack of palm oil, quick load, denser lather:load time, post shave and the fragrance that pulls me towards MdC.

Another interesting point may be if the price is mainly in the EO or otherwise. If you can source lemon oil imagine the relative price of Arko's base alone. Perhaps less than 20p? If so relatively speaking you could be paying more for the scent component of Arko than that of MdC respectively or Palmolive, as previous examples.

CF Lavender is a gorgeous scent, probably the most natural lavender I have smelt as an EO. As lavender is supposed to, this actually does relax or provide a sense of calm when shaving. Great scent strength.

Why are we singling out the Bodyshop's Maca Root shaving creme? Why not try one of the many dozens of other Maca Root shaving cremes, made by artisan and corporation alike?

(^ +1 Nishy. Always happy to big up Vicco. It's my daily creme, the wife also uses it as a cleanser, and it's less than three quid a tube)

I think this is just one example, but you are right many artisan creams on the market. I also believe if we were to go through all the creams we would be here for years :) saying that once you become attached to a brand/product, loyalty often holds no bars.

Take myself and Shavemac for example, I bet some believe I probably have a tattoo of Bernd on my ass (I don't). I suppose the only way to then validate your own beliefs is in the judgement of those more educated or experienced. Pretty much like anything in life. Obviously a degree of YMMV exists with intolerances or skin adversity but in general it works. Another good example is the popularity of Xpec.

Not really singling out Bodyshop's Maca Root shave cream. It is just that I can walk into a store and buy it locally without having to order it in so I use it. Personally I am not heavy into artisan shave soaps/creams as there are plenty of corporate products that work well enough for me.

I was mainly looking at price to performance ratios and why I would pay 3X the price of one over the other when the difference in performance for me, not anyone else, is so close as to be nonexistent. Scent is something else and there it really is a YMMV thing and not really directly related to a shave soaps/creams performance. No body want to use a horrid smell product just because it works well.

Glad Vicco was brought up in the discussion. That is one I had never heard of.
